Our Brains

Our brain is the most vulnerable organ in the body. It is made up of about 60% fats. Fatty acids are among the most crucial molecules that determine your brains integrity and ability to perform. Most of our brain growth is completed by 5-6 years of age. Essential fatty acids are required for maintenance of optimal health but they cannot be synthesised by the body and must be obtained from dietary sources.

Omega 3 fatty acids, are important for brain development during both the foetal and postnatal phase. One of the important Omega 3 oils are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). As messengers, they are involved in synthesis and function of brain neurotransmitters. Foods high in these Omega oils include oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines’ along with walnuts and almonds, seeds like flax or chia and avocados. Diet

A poor diet can affect our brain. Blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation can disrupt the blood supply to the brain. High in processed foods and high sugar can also prevent the brain cells from responding properly. If your diet is high in saturated fats, especially red meats and butter, these can be particularly harmful to the brain due to their inflammatory properties.
